Every August, we celebrate American Artist Appreciation Month, honoring the individuals whose creativity has enriched our lives and inspired generations. This year, we’d like to introduce you to an extraordinary artist whose story reminds us that our greatest accomplishments can come at any stage of life.
Alma Thomas didn’t become one of America’s most celebrated painters until after she retired.
Born in 1891, Thomas spent more than 35 years as an art teacher, encouraging young people to explore their creativity. While she painted throughout her life, it wasn’t until retirement that she devoted herself fully to her own artistic journey. What followed was nothing short of remarkable.
Inspired by the beauty of nature, gardens, flowers, sunlight, and the changing seasons, Thomas developed a vibrant, colorful style unlike any other. Rather than blending colors together, she applied small, mosaic-like brushstrokes that danced across the canvas. Her paintings seem to shimmer with movement and light, inviting viewers to experience the joy and energy she found in the world around her.
Looking at an Alma Thomas painting feels a bit like standing beneath the leaves of a tree as sunlight filters through the branches or watching a flower garden come alive on a warm summer afternoon.
