A September-Born Creative
Born on September 3, 1941, in Floyd County, Georgia, Linda Anderson didn’t pick up a paintbrush until she was 40 years old—but when she did, she created something truly amazing. Her memory paintings, full of relatable narratives of rural childhood scenes and portraits, has made her one of America’s foremost living memory painters.
Anderson’s early life was marked by hardship—raised in a tenant-farming family, she had to drop out of school to support her family after her father’s death. Anderson worked jobs as a maid and a nurse’s aide. It was during a tough time caring for her sick daughter that she began to paint (in 1980), reveling in a deep connection with her art.
Richly colored and emotionally evocative, her work has earned a place in the Whitney Museum of American Art, the High Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia.
