Artist Spotlight: Nam June Paik
Art, Technology, and Seeing the Future
Long before smartphones, video screens, and digital art became part of everyday life, Nam June Paik imagined a world where art and technology would work together.
Born in Korea in 1932, Paik became one of the pioneers of video art. He used televisions, cameras, electronic images, and sound to create works that challenged traditional ideas about what art could be.
Many of his sculptures incorporated television screens, moving images, and music. His work encouraged viewers to think differently about communication, media, and the growing influence of technology in our lives.
Paik once said that “the future is now.” Decades before the internet and video calls became commonplace, he envisioned a world connected through screens and electronic communication.
What makes his work especially relevant today is that it asks important questions: How does technology connect us? How does it change our relationships? Can technology be creative, emotional, and human?
