Recently, Teaching Artist Lauren, brought a touch of Canadian folk art into the classroom at Southminster, introducing our friends to the whimsical world of Maud Lewis.
Maud Lewis (1903–1970) was a beloved Canadian folk artist known for her bright, joyful paintings of everyday life. Despite living with physical challenges and poverty, she transformed her tiny Nova Scotia home into a colorful work of art, filling it with cheerful depictions of cats, birds, flowers, and rural scenes. Her work reminds us that creativity thrives in the simplest of places, and joy can be found in painting what we love most.
Inspired by Lewis’s painting Three Black Cats, Lauren guided the group in creating their own Halloween-themed art. The results were full of charm and personality—black cats with wide, curious eyes, each one capturing a unique spirit.
We loved seeing how the class connected with Lewis’s style, blending tradition, imagination, and the season’s colorful fun. These moments of creativity not only celebrate art but also bring laughter, expression, and connection to everyone involved.
