Winter Holidays Around the World
Winter is the darkest time of year—but it’s also the season of light. Across cultures and traditions, people have always met the long nights with candles, lanterns, fires, and celebrations that bring warmth to the body and the spirit.
In December, we see this in so many beautiful ways:
- Christmas lights twinkling on trees and in windows
- Hanukkah candles glowing one by one for eight nights
- Kwanzaa kinara candles honoring community and heritage
- Lanterns, stars, and festive displays that brighten homes and gathering places

For the people we serve, these traditions often carry deep memories—of family, faith, community, and hope. When we create art inspired by winter lights, we’re not just decorating a page. We’re inviting participants to remember, share, and reconnect with what has carried them through darker times.

In our Fine Art Miracles classes, we might:
- Paint glowing lanterns against a midnight sky
- Create collages of candles, stars, or stained-glass windows
- Use metallic or shimmering paints to capture the sparkle of holiday lights
Each project becomes a gentle conversation starter: What did the holidays look like when you were young? What lights do you remember? What traditions bring you comfort now?
As the nights grow longer, art gives us a way to hold on to the glow—together.
