As we wrap up Black History Month, 2026, we honor artists whose contributions shaped art history but were too often overlooked. One such artist is Eldzier Cortor, whose work centered the strength, dignity, and beauty of Black women at a time when those images were rarely celebrated.
Cortor was known for his graceful, almost lyrical paintings of women—often set in intimate, everyday environments. His figures are thoughtful and poised, conveying both softness and resilience.
