Summer in the “FAM” Cities

More about Pittsburgh

So you think you know everything about our Beloved ‘Burgh? Did you know:

Pittsburgh has more bridges than any other city in the world (446) more than Venice, Italy, or any other city in the world.

The emoticon was invented in Pittsburgh in 1980 by Carnegie Mellon University computer scientist, Scott Fahlman.

Pittsburgh is the largest city in the region known as Appalachia.

The Polio vaccine was created by Dr. Jonas Salk in Pittsburgh in 1950.

There are more than 700 sets of public stairs within the city limits of Pittsburgh. They are maintained by an actual Inspector of Steps.

The world’s first T-rex skeleton is on display at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.

In 1905, Pittsburgh became home to the first Nickelodeon, or modern movie theater. Today Pittsburgh is a popular site for movie making!

No matter what you know about the Burgh, you never know what’s over the hill or around the corner. The streets are still crazy steep and curly and the buildings often lean over you, curious but polite; as if to say, “Hi there, friend! How can I help?”
