What About Mental Health?

With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, all month long Fine Art Miracles is going to be opening up this conversation in hopes to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental illness and provide support for those that are struggling. 

So what is mental health? Mental health is about a persons emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Our mental health affects the way we think, feel and act. It also determines how we handle things like stress, and how we relate to others. 

Why is mental health important? Our mental health and physical health and are both equally important and can affect one another! Mental illnesses like depression can cause long-term conditions like diabetes, and heart disease; and poses an increased risk of other physical health problems. Similarly, someone affected by physical ailments has an increased risk of struggling with mental health issues. 

How do we cope? Coping with stress and mental health issues will look different for everyone because these issues present differently in everyone. But there are things that we can all do that will help you cope with stress in a healthy.

  1. Take care of your body – caring for your physical body is key in caring for your mental health! Make sure you are getting enough sleep, eating well, and staying active.
  2. Take time to unwind – giving yourself time to relax and unwind can do wonders for your stress-levels and mental health. Enjoy that time and try out activities that you love!
  3. Connect with others – this is so important! Social isolation is a leading factor in depression and other mental health issues. Reach out to and talk to people that you trust about how you are feeling!
